Dog Training 101: A Guide to Different Types of Anti-Bark Collars

Those of you who have a dog with a barking problem probably know how difficult and nerve-wracking this can be sometimes. But instead of taking it in some training classes which in most times can end up bad because of the severe teaching methods, you can easily improve its behaviour with one tool. Bark collars are the perfect training tools that have the purpose of correcting dogs’ behaviours. They are available in different types and all of them have one purpose in mind, to correct your dog’s behaviour when needed.

Types

Given the fact that there are different types, understanding all of them will give you a clearer picture of how they work and which one will be the best one for your furry friend.

Citronella Spray

This is the less invasive and most commonly used type of collar for dogs. When it comes to training your dog, consistency is key, and citronella anti bark collars for dogs seem to be the most reasonable solution so far.  Usually, they are activated by the vibration of the dogs’ vocal cords and microphone which reduces accidental correction which is the case with the ultrasonic models. While other types of collars might detect other dog’s barking or noise and correct your dog’s behaviour when not needed, accidents of this kind won’t happen with citronella anti bark collars for dogs. Thanks to the dual technology most of these collars have, they’ll sense only your dog’s vocal cord vibrations and nothing else. Once it detects barking, a gentle burst of spray will be released, so your furry friend will immediately stop barking. After a while, it’ll learn the lesson and you’ll no longer have to deal with its excessive and unnecessary barking.  These dog’ necklaces’ are effective for most dogs, however, some dog owners state that they aren’t as effective for stubborn and working breeds.

The reason why this spray necklace works wonders is because dogs find the smell unpleasant. Once the necklace starts spraying, your dog will feel the mist on its snout, smell the scent and just stop barking. Usually, these collars are rechargeable and can be refilled. You can either buy a ready-made spray, or you can buy an unscented one and add a few drops of citronella oil. You can do the same in water. The best thing is that this spray won’t cause any side effects on dogs nor will make a negative impact on the environment. Causing no side effects also makes it the perfect option for sensitive dogs and those who don’t like water in particular.

Ultrasonic

These collars emit an inaudible ultrasonic sound/tone which can be heard only by dogs. Just like the spray ones, the ultrasonic collars emit a sound only when they detect a dog barking through their built-in microphones. Even though they are effective when your dog is barking, these collars will basically become ineffective once other dogs near your dog start barking.

Practice shows that most dogs get used to the sound of these ultrasonic ‘necklaces’ so they’ll continue to bark through the tone. It seems that they are only effective on young small dogs, senior dogs and dogs with low temperament.

Electric

These are considered the most effective anti-barking solutions so far, however, they are also considered the most invasive which is why most dog owners avoid using them. These necklaces are activated by the vibration of the dog’s vocal cords which prevents accidental corrections, just like the citronella spray models, but instead of a spray, they send shock so a lot of people aren’t okay with this way of training. Depending on what you need, you can choose from collars that come with replaceable or rechargeable batteries. The electric types of necklaces are designed for stubborn dogs mainly.

When in the search for the right type of corrective necklace, first you should take into account the size and type of your dog. Whether you choose a citronella or other type, make sure to choose one according to your dog’s size and weight, otherwise, you risk investing in a collar that won’t be corrective.

You should also take into account their durability and water resistance. All of us know how dogs love to play, run and explore new things, so make sure to invest in one that is durable. Aside from looking for a water-resistant one in case when exposed to rain and snow, you should also look for one of this kind because some dogs love to dunk their head in water bowls. So, if your furry friend is one of them, make sure to look for one with a water-resistant feature. When searching for the right type and model, consider looking for one in trusted and reliable stores because they deal only with quality and durable collars coming from reputable brands.
