Skate Style 101: Essential Clothing Items for Nailing the Look

Skateboarding fashion is all about wearing comfy clothes that enable skaters to freely move, jump, and perform various tricks on their boards. You don’t necessarily need to own a skateboard to embrace this style. It’s enough to like it, to buy a few skate-inspired clothing items. Skate clothes have become a part of many people’s fashion choices, even if they don’t realize it. Skateboarding shirts are among the most popular skate items that even non-skaters choose to wear. They’re easy to match with almost any outfit be it a laidback street-style fashion, or to business casual combo.

Skate Style

Skater style emerged during the 1960s and 1970s when skateboarding became a thing. However, it wasn’t until the 1990s that the fashion associated with skateboarding reached its peak. As skateboarding became a global phenomenon, people started embracing the skate culture, giving rise to the skater style. The clothing was specifically designed to ease movement and provide comfort to skaters. Interestingly, this trend continues to thrive even today. You don’t necessarily need to own or use a skateboard to adopt the skater style. It has become a street fashion that effortlessly blends into your existing wardrobe, offering a laidback and comfortable look.

Most people associate graphic T-shirts with this style, which isn’t wrong, however, it’s not impossible to find skate shirts in plain colours only.
Skateboard shirts are a must-have in anyone’s wardrobe, regardless of whether they skate or not. Opt for loose, oversized designs that feature a brand name, slogan, logo, or image to achieve that skater vibe. Stick to crew-neck cuts to maintain the authentic skate style, and don’t hesitate to layer your graphic tee for a trendy throwback look. Some have short sleeves, while others have longer ones. You can find skate shirts in various styles and designs. Simply pair your t-shirt with an open overshirt, preferably in a check pattern, for a 90s-inspired outfit.

Hoodies

Hoodies are not just for skaters. They’re the ultimate comfort clothing that will keep you warm and cozy. You can pair them with any bottoms like jeans, trousers, skate pants, shorts, or jersey shorts. There are so many different styles to choose from, like oversized, crop tops, with or without zippers, and more. Hoodies are practical and comfy, making them perfect for various occasions like skating, camping, attending classes, hanging out with friends, going to the cinema, and the list goes on. If you’re a skater, you might want to consider a hoodie with a cool logo or graphic print on the front.

Skate Pants

Skaters need a pair of comfortable pair of pants that won’t limit their movements. If you’re deciding to get a pair of classic skate pants, choose
a cropped, wide-leg design or a cuff straight-leg style that hits a few centimetres above your ankle. These pants aren’t only wide and comfy, but they also make your days a breeze, even if you’re not a skateboarder. Forget about skinny jeans being too tight or sweatpants being too baggy because cargo skate pants are just right. They’re perfect for work or school, plus they come with plenty of pockets for your convenience. Pair them with a simple t-shirt, blouse, hoodie, or even a tank top. And if you really want that skater vibe, complete the look with some skate shoes and a cozy jacket.

Skate Shorts

Skateboarding is not complete without a pair of skate shorts. They are one of the most sought-after and trendy items of skateboard clothing. With their unrestricted design, they provide comfort and freedom of movement, and most importantly, they won’t make you feel hot, especially on warm days. Opt for cargo shorts with spacious pockets for a relaxed look. Pair them with an oversized t-shirt and skate shoes. If you prefer a more sophisticated look, go for chino shorts with a long and wide cut.

Skate Shoes

Skate shoes are the go-to footwear for skaters. They add that extra touch of style to any skater’s look, so finding the perfect pair is crucial. While there are plenty of new brands with amazing options, I’d recommend sticking to the classic style (unless you’re in the mood for some experimentation, of course).

Skate shoes are available in three different heights:
•    low-cut
•    mid
•    high-top.

Slip-ons, which are laceless low-top shoes, have their own unique style. They were originally developed in the 1960s and modern versions offer great board-feel. All the major skate brands now offer slip-ons. Skate shoes can be made from various materials, which affect their durability, weight, comfort, and performance.

Ventilation, soles, tongues, and lace eyelets are all designed to enhance skateboarding performance. When wearing skate shoes, it’s always recommended to wear a pair of socks for cushioning. High socks provide extra cushioning around the ankles and shins, offering additional protection while skateboarding.

Skate Accessories

Skate accessories are essential to complete this style. To achieve a classic skate look, you can start with the basics. You’ll need a chain to secure your wallet during tricks like 360s and ollies. The chain has become a trademark of the rebellious skate style. If you’re not a fan of chains, try tube socks, a backpack, or a logo cap. Bucket hats are also making a comeback, so don’t be afraid to rock one. And finally, a bum bag may not be everyone’s favourite, but it’s undeniably practical. Wear it across your chest for a complete urban look.
